Dua Lipa & Adele nominated for top album at Brit Awards & Grammys
Radiohead has been nominated for the top album award in both countries three times, more than anyone else. Sting & Adele share second place.
Dua Lipa’s sophomore album, Future Nostalgia, is a hit with awards voters on both sides of the Atlantic. The album was nominated for a Brit Award for British album of the year (branded Mastercard Album) on Monday (March 31) four months after it received a Grammy nomination for album of the year. It’s the first album to be nominated for the top album honor at both of these shows since Adele’s 25.
Lipa and Adele are two of just four female artists with albums that were nominated for top album honors in both countries. The first two were Annie Lennox (for Diva) and the late Amy Winehouse (for Back to Black).

Radiohead has been nominated for the top album honor in both countries three times, more than anyone else. Sting and Adele share second place, with two albums each that were nominated for top honors in both countries.
One album by an American artist — Michael Jackson’s Thriller — won the top album award in both countries; it won the Brit Award in 1984, the second of two years that the award in this category automatically went to the year’s best-seller.
Two albums by British artists won the Grammy for album of the year but lost the equivalent Brit Award — in their home country. That was the fate of George Michael’s Faith and Mumford & Sons’ Babel.
Two of these albums were nominated for British album of the year twice at the Brits. Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms won on its second try (in 1987). Radiohead’s Kid A lost both times (2001-02).
Future Nostalgia has also been a hit with music fans on both sides of the Atlantic. It logged four weeks at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums chart, longer any other album in 2020 (or 2021, so far). And, thanks to a post-Grammys spike, it reached a new high of No. 3 on the Billboard 200 last week.
Here’s the complete list of albums that have been nominated for album of the year at the Grammys and British album of the year at the Brits. The years shown are the Grammy years in which they competed. (Because of differing eligibility periods, the year of record for the Brits sometimes differed).

Note: In 1977, 10 years after its release, the Brits gave a special award to the Beatles’ landmark Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The album had won the 1967 Grammy for album of the year, but its Brit Award was an after-the-fact honor, which is a little different.
